A Word from Your Editor:
Happy fall! Boy, am I glad I can say that now! Fall is my favorite season with the changing of the leaves, cool breezes, apple picking, and searching for just the right pumpkin!
I think the best unit study I've done with my kids was on apples. We went apple picking. We learned about different types of apples. We made applesauce, apple butter, and apple pie. We studied Johnny Appleseed and learned about grafting apples. It was a great learning experience not only for the kids but for me too!
That's the great thing about unit studies. You're all learning the same things, but the kids "catch" what they will by their maturity and interest. Yet in the end, you've all experienced it together!
Join me this month as Maggie Hogan takes us on a journey through Monet's Garden. I wonder if apple trees grew in Monet's Garden? Maggie's even got us planning a virtual trip to Giverny! If only ...
After traveling to Giverny, you just might be inspired to take better care of yourself. In the Hands of a Child gives us a "hearty" unit study on "Healthy Bodies." It's filled to the brim with activities! Your kids will enjoy getting healthy with this unit.

Isn't there a saying somewhere "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? I'll leave you with this bit of trivia. Did you know that apple seeds are considered edible? But because they contain a small amount of cyanide, they can be tolerated only in small amounts. Keep the apple seeds away from the kids, or you won't be staying away from the doctor!
See you next month! Blessings!

Before Starting (How to glean as much as possible from a book):
- What do you hope to learn?
- Have other books available with pictures from that place or time (Find them at the library!).
- Use highlighters--for example, highlight all the names of places or geographic references. (Don't do this to death, though!)
- You might want to map what you come up with.
- Quotable quotations--highlight or write down a favorite quote from each chapter, even in non-fiction.
- Create a response journal and write (or have younger children dictate) a response to important plot developments or to each chapter.
- Compare where you live with the neighborhood or town in your book.
Possible Projects:
- Make folder books or Lapbooks™.
- Keep a fictional diary.
- Do a dramatization.
- Create a timeline.
- Put together a culture kit.
- Assemble a diorama.
- Draw a Venn diagram.

HEALTHY BODIES By In the Hands of a Child
It is very important to keep our bodies fit and working properly. A person who is fit eats well, has a healthy weight, and does lots of physical activities (exercise). When a person is physically fit, he or she feels good, looks good, and is able to do fun things like run around, ride bikes, and dance without getting tired. Kids exercise all the time without even knowing it! Every time you run, jump, dance, or play you are exercising!
Kids should follow five basic rules to stay fit and healthy:
- Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
- Drink more water and milk than other beverages.
- Listen to your body; eat only until you are full.
- Limit screen time. Screen time includes watching television, watching movies, playing on the computer, and playing video games.
- Be active!

In the Hands of a Child is owned by Niki McNeil, Kimm Bellotto, and Katie Kubesh. These three moms actually met online through hobbies and homeschooling! They have merged different talents, educational backgrounds and experiences together to form a business that is growing as fast as their combined 10 children are!
Kimm has four children (ages 22, 20, 10, and 9), two are homeschool graduates, and two are still homeschooling. Kimm does all of the graphic work and editing at In the Hands of a Child. Niki, who designs hands-on activities and handles sales, homeschools her three children (ages 10, 6, and 4) as well. A mutual interest in lapbooking brought Kimm and Niki together, and they started In the Hands of a Child. In 2002 they published their first unit. In 2005, Katie joined the team as a partner with a new educational perspective. Mom to three (ages 5, 4, and 1), Katie's oldest attends public school. Katie is the author/researcher for In the Hands of a Child.
Recognizing that hands-on projects are essential to the learning experience, In the Hands of a Child has created Project Packs that go beyond the hands-on aspect giving your child real ownership of knowledge from a fun and interesting framework.
