What's Inside

Commander's Report - What's New on the Home Front
   By Trish Nonaka

Like many of you, I am beginning to prepare for the upcoming holiday season and winter. Do you find yourself counting down the days until CHRISTmas? I do! We decided when our daughters were very small to place the focus on Christ and not "Santa." We began to eliminate that from our celebration and build up our celebration of God's gift to us - Himself!

I'm sure you know that as military families we are adept at counting down days to momentous events. It might be days till Daddy comes home, days before the next big move, or days until deployment. As Christians one thing we count down are the days of Advent. So I'm excited that Renae is going to share some terrific resources and ideas on Advent in this issue.

Have you noticed that, in the military, you begin to have a variety of names? Not only do you have your given name and various derivatives of Mama, but you become known as "spouse," "family member," "responsible party," "parent," "Chief's wife," or any other of endless titles. Using what we discovered is a favorite song for both of us, Janet explores some of the wonderful names of God. I am sure you will be as blessed by this as I was!

Our oldest daughter will be home for a few days this month, and we plan to do some holiday baking while she is here. We usually create delicious trays of baked goodies for my husband's troops, friends, and neighbors. It's a great way to enjoy holiday baking but not keep all the goodies around the house! Renee is back in the Chow Hall this month and gives us a recipe for gourmet cookies that I am sure is going to find its way onto my baking list!

And just in time for this busy season, Jennifer reminds us to take time for recharging our batteries! Let's make time for ourselves not just during the holidays but every day. As busy homeschooling moms, we need to be sure our cup is filled before we begin pouring out to others--especially as military homeschool moms! Just like Jennifer, many of you are going it alone right now and have deployed husbands. It's vital to make time for YOU to be refreshed, so pick up some ideas here!

And since it's a time when we are all thinking of Jesus' birth, I thought I would let you know about a program called Operation Special Delivery. Be sure to check it out if you, or someone you know, is expecting while Dad is deployed. Speaking of that, "Survival Training" this month consists of ideas on homeschooling through the holidays or those times when Dad isn't around. I'm sure you will find something helpful there. Let's not stay around chatting ... let's move out! We've got troops to educate!

Boot Camp: Celebrate Advent
   By Renae Meyer

Advent is defined as coming into view or arriving. Celebrating Advent (with a capital A) is simply celebrating the arrival of Jesus. It is anticipating the coming in to view of the Messiah.

I used to think I can't truly "do" advent with all the Scripture reading each night (my young kids won't sit that long) and the candles (my kids just like to blow them out--over and over!) and the songs and organizing all that. However, I've learned over the years it doesn't have to be perfectly like I envision it or by the book for that matter (there's a homeschool lesson in there somewhere!). There is no "right" way to celebrate Advent. It is wonderful to read the Scriptures while the candles on the wreath burn brightly. We have read Jotham's Journey, Tabitha's Travels, and Bartholomew's Passage, and they are excellent. They are a really good way to not miss a night, simply because the kids won't let you; they have to know what happens next. Gathering around the advent wreath and singing Christmas carols have had their place focusing our hearts on the upcoming celebration. Making a Jesse tree with Old Testament ornaments to recall God's great deeds is another idea. Another is a modern-day Jesse tree with the things God has done in our lifetime hanging from the branches. The kids love those advent calendars where you open a door each day to count down to Jesus' birthday. Make sure you get one for each child, though, or it will become a daily lesson in whose turn it is! How about taking a detour from regular Bible study to focus on Jesus' birth, prophecies about Him, or the names of God for the month before Christmas? A puzzle set up for the whole family to work on and enjoy while Christmas music plays in the background is a nice way to end the day. I've heard of families giving out small gifts each week and working up to one large one on Christmas day to lessen the gift-unwrapping frenzy. Some families give each other only three gifts because that's what baby Jesus got. We always bake Jesus a birthday cake and sing to Him before we open gifts on Christmas morning. Instead of a tree, a manger set up with the gifts laid before it reminds our family that it's all about Jesus.

I encourage you this year to gather together as a family and set aside time each day and focus on Him. Make the celebration of the arrival of Jesus last the whole month. Focus on the great gift we were given over 2000 years ago. Christmas isn't about the tree or the guy in the red suit or family or food or presents, although all those can have their place, it's all about the gift God gave to us: Jesus His Son.

Flag Pole - "Why I Love My Husband So Much!"
   Photo submitted by Jennifer McDonald

Do you remember the photo we ran a few months back of Chief with "Frankie"?
Here is one more of him with another Iraqi child. His wife tells us,
"Why I love my husband so much...

This little girl's family was executed and she was shot in the head. She has been crying and John has been holding and falling asleep with her for the last four nights. She really is coming along in the healing. Wish we could take in all these young children but its not that easy."
BTW, John has now returned home safely! Welcome Home! Job well done!

Do you have photos or a story about why you love your husband so much? Send them to us here and we will include them in future issues of the Home Front. Email to: HomeFront@theoldhomeschoolhouse.com

Survival Training - Holidays and Homeschooling
   By Trish Nonaka

The holidays can be both exciting and frazzling at the same time, especially while homeschooling. After 14 plus years of homeschooling I have learned a few survival strategies to make life much more pleasant for everyone (including me!) during the holiday season. And don't forget, these survival techniques work everyday, not just during the holidays. Approaching our learning from this perspective really is a time and spirit saver for me when we face times with Daddy being gone. It does mean that I need to sit down and really think about what we did during the day and how it fits into "schooling." I use this as a time for me to write to my husband about what we did and keep him in touch with our activities.

Here are just a few:
  • Plan ahead
  • Shop early
  • Bake, cook, and freeze
  • Eliminate things from your full plate - simplify
  • Include the children … but not in everything (Mama needs a breather too!)
  • Cancel or change your lesson plans
The last one is the one we are going to talk about here. The holidays and winter season lend themselves beautifully to homeschooling. There are a variety of things you can do while just focusing on those topics. We've already shared a few ideas in the Boot Camp article and in the Brat Report on things you can do for Advent. If you just can't allow yourself to take the time off from school altogether, at least try to step back and see all your holiday preparations through new eyes. Almost everything can be counted as "school" without being a formal lesson.
  • Baking = Math, Home Ec, Science, Health
  • Nutcracker = Fine Art, Music, Theater
  • Card Making or Sending = Language Arts, Art, Social Studies (hey, if going to the post office during Christmas doesn't count as a field trip, what does?), Prayer (it's wonderful to pray for each family as you are preparing the card to be sent to them and when you receive one as well!), Geography
  • Tree cutting = Nature, Science
  • Decorating = Home Ec, Life skills, Art
  • Reading Christmas stories = Lang Arts, Reading, History (depending on the story of course)
  • Listening to Carols = Music history and appreciation
  • Attending your church services and visiting other churches = Bible, History, Culture
  • Family Newsletter = Language Arts, Computer skills, Photography
  • Housecleaning = Home Ec, Life Skills, Hospitality
  • Travel = Geography, Family History, Map skills, Weather
  • Candy Making = Science, Home Ec
  • Caroling/Bell Ringing = Music
  • Table setting = Etiquette, Home Ec, Hospitality
  • Movie viewing = Drama, Theater (especially if your family is like ours and memorizes all the lines)
  • Scrapbooking = History, Photography, Art, Language Arts
  • Gift buying, wrapping and giving = Service, Hospitality, Math, Consumerism, Creativity, PE (if you are walking around the shops!)
Gift making can allow you to teach every subject across the curriculum. Try your hand at glycerin soaps, create bird feeders with food, teach the children how to knit or crochet, or learn to whittle or do wood burning. How about trying mosaics on flowerpots, or putting together any of those nifty gifts-in-a-jar ideas? Paint on rocks to make personal paperweights or smooth agates for jewelry with a rock tumbler. For more ideas check out Craft-of-the-Week at www.homeschoolzone.com/pp/index3.htm and be sure to visit the Christmas section.

A to Z Homeschooling has an article on this subject too and I had to laugh aloud when I read about using the Twelve Days of Christmas for Math … it's counting backwards! That is very creative thinking! homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/articles/120998.htm I loved the idea of using the yearly gingerbread house for geometry. See? It's all in the way you look at things!

So whether you are facing the holidays, deployment, or separation for other military reasons, look at the things you are doing in daily life and see how they apply to real life learning. Some of the ideas here would work very nicely in sending care packages to Daddy or other troops and you don't have to feel you are neglecting your child's learning.

Additional Duty: A Modern-Day "Gift of the Magi"
   By Sheri Payne

I love O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi." What an inspiration that, at this holiest time of year, we selflessly and quietly spread the love of God through sacrificial giving. It is through the unknown, unexpected, and thoughtful gift that we experience the presence of God's kingdom here on earth. The dinner left on a doorstep, the anonymous gifts for the children of the single mom down the block, the family celebration shared with the family two houses down whose loved one is in Iraq - those are the true expressions of the love of Christ.

Most of these are unknown but nonetheless appreciated. Those who do them are not looking for the praise of man. They are not even looking for recognition. Those who do these deeds of kindness are, through gratefulness to God, looking to pass along the blessings they've received. It is that simple, and it is that profound.

One of these unsung heroes is near and dear to the heart of every military family, even if many have never heard of him. For 14 years, Morrill Worcester has quietly acted as the military's own Magi. Every year, in mid-December, a large truck from Worcester Wreath Company pulls up to Arlington National Cemetery, filled with fresh evergreen Christmas wreaths. There is one for every grave, for those known and unknown, from the highest general to the lowliest private.

See this generous deed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYAneQMvEuw

He used to place every wreath with the help of a few volunteers. Word got around, though, and volunteers from all over the D.C. area flock to help. School groups, Civil Air Patrol, and Air Force personnel all gather to participate each year. They are all honored to do so.

We have an opportunity to get involved as well. This year they will be expanding the program. Their goal is ambitious - to cover every veteran's cemetery across the country with fresh wreaths. "Wreaths Across America" is the name of this wonderful project. If you are interested in helping bring this project to your local veteran's cemetery or monument, contact them through this website: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

God bless you, Mr. Worcester. You are truly our Magi.

Sheri Payne is the wife of 13 years to Jim, a Navy Deep Sea Diver (her own Man of Honor), and mom to two girls, ages 11 and 7, and a boy, 9. She has been involved with homeschooling since she began researching it before her own children were born. She is currently on the militaryhip team of her local homeschool group, and also maintains the Hawaii blog for Homeschool Nations. Chapel - "And His Name Shall Be Emmanuel"
   By Janet Kelly

I love the Christmas season. It is a yearly love letter from God, a reminder of His love for me. When I look at the familiar passages from the Christmas story, I like to spend time basking in their familiar words while seeking God's message to me. One thing I have learned over the past few years is the significance of the names given Christ in the Old and New Testaments.

Names in the Bible had significance. They were prophetical in nature. They could tell people (and us today), about the person's life, personality, etc. This becomes important because we are given beautiful names for our Lord in the Old Testament in the prophecies of His coming birth. Matthew 1:23 is also the fulfillment of the prophecies found in Isaiah. As we draw closer to this glorious season of celebrating Christ's birth, let us spend some time looking at His names and their significance to us as military spouses and homeschoolers.

Isaiah 9:6 says, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (ESV). Let's look at these names. First, He is our Wonderful Counselor. What does this say to you? He is called Wonderful for He is both God and man. The pure love He is and pure love He has continues to be the wonder of men and angels alike. He is Counselor for He has sat at the Father's right hand throughout eternity. He created our world and us. He knows God's counsel from eternity. No one teaches or advises like Him.

He is the Mighty God. Wrapped up in that is the name of Elohim, Creator. And the name, Jehovah-Sabbaoth, The Lord of Hosts (a mighty army). Power any less could not create or be the Righteous Banner under which we receive protection. Only God can bring it to pass.

Everlasting Father. Christ, the Messiah, is one with the Father. They were together in eternity past and will be together forever. He is all we need as our Heavenly Father. One with His Father, He longs to hold us close, longs to lavish His love on us. He longs to hear our worries and concerns and to hear the confessions of our hearts and give us complete forgiveness.

Prince of Peace. Through this name He reconciles us to God. He gives us peace in our hearts and in our minds. It is in Him we find peace. Remember, if we abide in Him, He will abide in us and His peace will cover us. Though the enemy's arrows seek to destroy us, He will give us perfect peace.

Matthew 1:23 says,"… and they shall call his name Emmanuel." Emmanuel means "God with us." He is with us! Not only was He man and with the world during His time on earth, He is with us today. We are never alone. We don't have to be afraid. We need only to lean on Him and He is with us. He is our Wonderful Counselor, our Mighty God, our Everlasting Father, our Prince of Peace, and our Emmanuel. Take time to refresh yourself and teach your children about our Messiah, the Messiah of Christmas. Have a blessed Christmas season, from our home to yours.

Janet Kelly is the wife of Army chaplain Mike Kelly and mom to one son. They recently returned from Korea to the US and have begun their second year of homeschooling. Her desire is to encourage women to treasure God with all of their heart (Matt. 6:19-21) and guard their heart (Prov. 4:23) by recognizing that they are the heart of their home. Chow Hall - Gourmet Chocolate Chunk Cookies
   By Renee Giza

Here is a sweet but simple cookie recipe for easy entertaining of family and friends. This recipe makes about six dozen cookies. If you do not wish to have these tempting treats staring at you all day, you can make a few and freeze the rest by forming the dough into a log shape and then wrapping it in plastic wrap. Enjoy! (Note from Trish: You could make rolls of this, attach a note and give as a sweet gift!)

Gourmet Chocolate Chunk Cookies
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups flour (use 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour and 1 cup flour for a healthier alternative.)
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 package semi-sweet chocolate chunks (white chocolate chunks work great too)
2 cups walnuts (or other favorite nuts)
2 cups dried cranberries (Raisins, dried cherries, or blueberries would be yummy also.)
PREHEAT oven to 375°F. Beat butter and sugars in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, baking soda, and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate, nuts, and cranberries.

DROP rounded tablespoonfuls of dough, 1-1/2 inches apart, onto ungreased baking sheets. BAKE 10 to 12 min. or until lightly browned. Cool 3 min.; remove to wire racks. Cool completely. Store in tightly covered container at room temperature.

Renee Giza is the proud wife of 10 years to Chris, a communications troop in the Air Force, currently stationed in Eastern WA State. She is a proud mother to five wonderful and busy children (three girls and two boys.) She has been homeschooling for 3 years now, and plans on continuing through High School. Mom's R&R - Mom Time
   By Jennifer McDonald

One of my favorite things to do is get together with other homeschool moms, especially military homeschool moms! Last week, I had a chance have coffee with several moms here at Beale AFB, and I brought up the question, "what do you do for 'Mom time'?"

The answers were as varied and creative as the ladies I was sitting with that day. All agreed that carving out time for our own interests must be intentional. Whether it is making certain to communicate to husbands that we have that need to regroup, trading babysitting time with friends when hubbies aren't available, or being creative with time when the kids are asleep--no matter, it's important to be conscious of what makes each of us tick. Many of us are at the point in life where just finding time to floss our teeth or wax eyebrows is a luxury!

For myself, a good 'power walk' is usually a daily occurrence. I am also very content to putter around at home when I'm able. What keeps me rested is curbing back on too many outside activities and keeping myself focused on home life. When that is running smooth and orderly, I am a much more rested and contented mommy. Just ask my kids!

Obviously, we don't all function in the same way, so for those of us craving some 'Mom time', here are some thoughts from the great group of ladies here!

For those of us who crave solitude:
  • Take a walk
  • Wake up 30 minutes early to read the Bible and pray
  • Keep a daily journal
  • Scrapbook-one mom mentioned this helps her to be thankful for her family and pray for them as she goes over photos
  • Read a good book (not surprisingly, this is high on the list for all of us book loving moms!)
  • Window shop
  • Cook or bake using a new recipe
  • Knit, crochet, stamp …. (Fill in the blank with your favorite craft!)
For the more social among us:
  • Make a phone date with a long-distance friend and catch up
  • Go to a local homeschool support group meeting
  • Treat yourself to lunch or shopping with friends
  • Join a bowling league, aerobics class, or craft class
  • Go to the gym
As the holidays and all its activities approach at breakneck speed, I hope you will take some time to do something you love! Drop me a line and tell me what you're up to. I just thought of a friend I need to make a phone date with!

I am Jennifer McDonald, and recently celebrated my 18th anniversary (!!) with my high school sweetheart, Steve. We have four always-been-homeschooled children, ranging in age from 7-14. We're an Air Force family, currently stationed in Northern California. I love reading, walking, scrapbooking, and cooking! Visit me at www.HomeschoolBlogger.com/AFJen88
